Patrick spent his first month in the Neonatal ICU in Michigan. Those are some of our favorite memories as a family because we were just getting to know each other. The medical staff felt like a family and helped us get ready for the road ahead.

On Thanksgiving Day, Patrick was flown by air ambulance to Primary Children's Hospital. He finally got to meet some of his extended family. Two weeks later, he got to come home with us - just in time for his first Christmas.

In January 2009, we were surprised when we received word that the courts had agreed to finalize the adoption 4 months early so that we would have no legal boundaries to his medical care. In February, we took him to an LDS temple for a sealing ceremony. This is a ceremony similar to a marriage that unites families, including adopted children, together in the eyes of God both for time and for eternity.

These next months brought lots of firsts: First haircut, first laughs, first outpatient surgery, first trip to Seattle, first re-hospitalization, first solid foods, and more.

Unfortunately, Patrick spent most of these months in the hospital. From May through July he was hospitalized with a series of infections - the last of which created a perfect storm that almost took Patrick's life. He went into cardiac arrest on July 15th and spent 2 weeks in the PICU. Miraculously, he did recover and we were able to bring him home again just days after he turned 9 months old.

When we started out, we didn't imagine that the last few months of Patrick's first year would be so focused on his intestines. Mid-September, he had a surgery to take his ostomy down, connecting his small and large intestine for the first time. Because the large intestine had never been used, it was very narrow and didn't work well. Meanwhile, his overworked small intestine turned out not to be very strong any more. The result was a much longer than expected hospital stay, and then a new focus in his care at home. Nonetheless, he did come home and we were all thrilled he was here.

Since Patrick was sick most of his first summer, this summer was filled with firsts! First vacation. First trip to the beach. First time the doctors have been worried about him being overweight, instead of underweight. And very, very little time in the hospital.
